Print bleed calculator

Start with the finished size after cutting. Add your printer’s bleed on every edge to find the full artwork size and pixel dimensions.

Width, height and bleed all use the selected physical unit. Changing units preserves those measurements.

0.125 in is an example, not a requirement. Enter the bleed specified for your print job; zero is allowed.

Use the required image pixels per inch. PPI here is not the printer’s ink-dot resolution.

Trim size and artwork size answer different questions

Trim is the size you expect to hold after the sheet is cut. Bleed is artwork that continues outside that boundary. A background that should reach the finished edge must extend through this extra area. Keep important text inside the printer’s separate safe area; the bleed itself will be removed. Add the bleed twice, then convert to pixels

For millimeters, divide the artwork measurement by 25.4 before multiplying by PPI. The same bleed is applied to all four edges. This tool does not model different inside and outside margins, binding allowances, folds, or individual printer marks.

A US Letter example

Take a finished 8.5 × 11 in page with 0.125 in outside every edge. Its artwork is 8.75 × 11.25 in. At 300 PPI that is exactly 2,625 × 3,375 pixels. After trimming, the intended page remains 8.5 × 11 in. The extra width does not make the finished flyer larger.

Why a pixel result may differ by one

The exact metric example is about 2,551.181 × 3,578.740 pixels at 300 PPI. A raster canvas needs whole pixels. This tool rounds each full dimension up, so the canvas does not fall short of the requested physical size. Software using nearest-integer rounding will report 2,551 pixels for the width instead. Neither convention changes the intended trim measurement.

If your page-layout software accepts physical dimensions and a bleed setting, enter those measurements directly. If your workflow requires a raster file, confirm the printer’s pixel rounding and export requirements. The readout shows the physical extent represented by the rounded canvas. Bleed guides can fall between pixels; rounding each edge independently can produce a different total.

Is 3 mm the same as an eighth of an inch?

No. Using the exact inch-to-millimeter relationship, 0.125 in equals 3.175 mm. If the printer asks for 3 mm, use 3 mm. Unit switching here converts the measurement rather than silently replacing it with a different regional default.

What this prepares—and what still needs your artwork

The result is a dimension plan. It does not extend a background, create crop marks, export a print PDF, or certify a file. Extend the actual image or background through the bleed in your design application, and review the final export with your print provider.
