Know the pixel count and the print size? Find the image resolution in pixels per inch (PPI), often called “DPI” in print requests.
To go the other way and find the print size from a chosen PPI, use the pixels to inches converter. Its print planner also compares crop and border options using both image dimensions.
How to calculate image DPI, more precisely PPI
Divide the number of image pixels along one edge by the length of that same edge in the finished print:
For example, 3,000 pixels across a 10-inch print gives 300 PPI. Print that same uncropped edge at 20 inches and it gives 150 PPI. This calculation measures how closely the existing pixels are placed; it does not add detail to the file.
For a metric measurement, first convert it to inches. A width of 25.4 cm is 10 inches, so a 3,000-pixel image at that width still gives 300 PPI.
PPI and printer DPI measure different things

There is no single universal multiplier that converts a printer’s DPI specification into the image PPI you should supply. Ask the print service for its image-resolution requirement when a brief says “300 DPI.” Adobe distinguishes these two measurements in its printer resolution documentation.
Common print dimensions at 300 PPI
These examples are calculated by multiplying each dimension in inches by 300. They specify pixel dimensions for the stated shape; a photograph with a different shape may need cropping or borders.

Does the result mean my print will look good?
Resolution is one part of the answer. The original focus, compression, sharpening, printing method, paper and viewing distance also affect the result. Treat 300 PPI as a common reference point and use the print provider’s specification for the actual job.
If you crop an image, calculate with the pixels left after cropping. If you use borders, calculate against the printed image area, rather than the entire sheet.
Will changing the DPI setting create a sharper image?
Changing resolution metadata without resampling leaves the pixel count unchanged. At a fixed print size, it cannot create detail that was absent from the original image. Resampling changes the number of pixels; a larger output file does not by itself prove that the source has more detail. See Adobe’s explanation of printed image resolution and resampling.
